People Powered Fair Maps Discussion with Assemblyperson Dr. Kelles & People’s Hearing on 2021 New York State Redistricting

April 29 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Mark your calendars! On April 29, 2021, the League of Women Voters will host events around the country to increase public awareness and engagement around the redistricting process, and make sure the public’s voice is heard. Since redistricting occurs every ten years, this is a once in a decade opportunity to advocate on behalf of ourselves and our neighbors.

Tompkins County League of Women Voters, alongside the Cortland County League of Women Voters, are meeting virtually with State Assemblyperson Dr. Anna Kelles on April 29th at 5pm. We invite members of both Leagues to join us as we introduce the League, talk about our non-partisan stance, and discuss People Powered Fair Maps with Dr. Kelles.

New district lines can be drawn to intentionally decrease voters’ power based solely on their political party. We believe redistricting should be fair and transparent. People Powered Fair Maps™ advocates for redistricting processes that eliminate partisan and racial gerrymandering nationwide.

The League will be inviting selected applicants to provide oral testimony at our People’s Hearing on April 29th at 6:30 pm. Testifiers will be selected based on their written testimony and the region of the state they represent.

New Yorkers wishing to testify or provide written comments can submit written testimony through this Google Form: https://forms.gle/odoCJxp82fxjZpWe9

Or by emailing their testimony to peopleshearingtestimony@gmail.com

·    Testifiers should include their name, contact email, and where they reside in New York State.

·    Testifiers should consider whether they are, or their community is, adequately represented in government, be it at the local, state, or federal level. If not, what issues in your community do you feel are not being addressed?

·    What their “community of interest” looks like, what is most important to their community, and whether redistricting – redrawing your district’s map – would help.

·    Testifiers should also let us know the key points they’d like to bring forward.

While there is no limit on the length of a testifiers statement, please note that if you elect to and are selected to present your remarks orally at our People’s Hearing, the allotted time would be no more than 3 minutes.

Testifiers wishing to be considered for oral comments must submit their testimony by April 19th.

Testifiers who are selected will be notified during the week of April 19th and given directions on how to participate in the hearing.

Testifiers will not be allowed to use PowerPoint or other visual aids Via Zoom.

If you are not selected to testify, your comments will be collected and submitted to the State Legislature and Independent Redistricting Commission. Individuals submitting comments can also request not to be considered for oral comment selection.

The League will also make submissions available to the general public through our NYRedistricting.org webpage.

The hearing will take place on April 29th, from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm and will be available via Zoom webinar and Facebook live.
